Physician Licensing in Canada: find the pathway that fits you

Clinical assistant and associate physician roles, and Practice-Ready Assessment programs for family physicians, province by province. Tell me where you stand, and I will filter every program and licence against your profile.

Adapted from the e-book "Physician Licensing in Canada", written by Dr. Filipe Santos and published by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC). This interactive version is an independent educational resource and is not an official MCC product. Last reviewed July 2026.

Start by telling me where you stand

Answer once, and I will screen you against every Practice-Ready Assessment program in family medicine and every clinical assistant and associate physician licence, based on the requirements summarized from the source e-book. Nothing you type here is stored or sent anywhere.

Your postgraduate training

Many physicians completed more than one of these. Enter every piece that applies, and put 0 where something does not apply.

Tick the rotations you completed and enter the weeks you did in each. Sum the weeks across your internship and your family medicine residency. Leave the rest at 0.

Your independent practice experience, over your whole career

Programs use these totals to judge your experience. Independent practice means you practised under your own licence as the most responsible physician (MRP), making final decisions for your patients without a supervisor signing off. Registrar and other supervised posts do not count here; they belong in the next section.

Your recent clinical activity (currency of practice)

This is about how recently you practised, and in what capacity. Most people have a mix, so enter the months separately for each kind. Programs count each kind differently.

Kind of clinical activityMonths in the last 3 yearsMonths in the last 5 years
Independent practiceUnder your own licence, as the most responsible physician. Last 3 years Last 5 years
Accredited postgraduate trainingInternship, residency, or clinical fellowship in an accredited program. Last 3 years Last 5 years
Supervised non-MRP practice, in a licensed roleYou held a licence and treated patients, but a supervising physician remained the most responsible physician. Examples: a licensed clinical assistant or associate physician in Canada, or a registrar in a non-training post in the United Kingdom or Australia. Unlicensed observerships do not count.
